Headshots: Information & FAQs

As a headshot photographer my mission is to create a first impression that shows your confidence, professionalism, and approachability.

There are many photographers that work predominantly with actors and models for headshots. I specialise in business headshots. Let's make you stand head and shoulders above the crowd.

You want professional images that convey to your clients that you are serious in the field in which you work and that you will provide the highest level of service. It is my priority to create headshots that will help you grow your success, no matter where your headshot may be displayed.

I am not just taking your picture, I am showing you in your absolute best light. This includes perfecting the lighting, tones, backdrops, and appearance. When you hand someone your business card or create other types of marketing materials, you should feel delighted with your photo. You should be proud to share your business headshot with those you wish to do business with.

Your Headshot is:

  • Your first impression
  • Your digital calling card
  • Who people imagine you are when they are emailing / calling / social networking with you
  • A statement about yourself and how you do business and want to communicate

Perfect for professionals who want to update their image and look at the top of their game.

How do you work with me during my session?

Most people I work with do not like having their photo taken, but know that epic headshots give a huge boost to their personal brand. Your headshot is all about you marketing yourself. I can show you how to look confident, professional and trustworthy in front of my camera. Coaching is my key to success. I coach you to look your best. It is that simple. It is still a photo of you - but on your best day. Ever.

How do I choose which image I like?

At the end of your session you get to look at your images and choose the ones that you like. We are all naturally biased to look for imperfections and things that we do not like. Other people see us differently and focus on other things. I will be there to guide you as a professional who has seen countless headshots. Imagine that I am your next client, I will be able to tell you which photo makes you look the most confident and approachable. I will then retouch your chosen image(s).

What is retouching?

Retouching is a part of the production process after your headshot session. I retouch all my images by hand, in-house. This entails smoothing stray hairs, removing blemishes, softening under-eye circles, colour correcting and more. I strive to keep your images natural, with the retouching extremely subtle. I do not want you to feel like you look plastic or fake! It's important that texture remain on the face for your image to look natural (not like you are made of plastic). Your headshot should actually look like you!

What about your painterly signature style?

I am known for my signature painterly style portraits. These are good fun and something a bit different. If you like the look of this style there is no additional cost - I just need to know beforehand as the process of capturing and retouching your image is quite different.

How are my images given to me?

Your fully retouched image(s) will be delivered, in JPEG format, via my secure online gallery. You will have the right to use that image on the web, in all of your social media, in print, and in any other format that you like. There is no media, time or location limit on your usage rights.

What is the best advice you can give me as a I prepare for my session?

This is a great question. First of all, take care of yourself! Eat well, drink lots of water, and take good care of your skin. Now is not the time to try a new skin treatment. Stay out of the sun as much as possible, and get a lot of sleep. If you colour your hair or need a cut, make sure that you do this at least a week in advance so that the cut can settle down and the colour can settle in before your shoot. Try to not tweeze or do any hair removal in the days leading up to the shoot. Men, if you’d like a clean-cut look, you're welcome to shave before the shoot or during the shoot as desired. If you want to start with a beard or any facial hair, make sure that you have plenty of time to grow it before your shoot date.

What should I do the night before to prep for my shoot?

Nothing! The night before is when you should be sleeping, resting, and feeling relaxed. Get a good nights sleep the night before. Don't go out drinking, don’t stay up too late, and don't get too stressed!

What about Makeup?

My recommendation is to wear the same amount as you normally would to a business meeting. If anything, slightly lighter than normal. I can enhance makeup when retouching, but it is difficult to take it away. Matte makeup under studio lights is much more flattering than shimmer or shine.

I am looking for everyone in my organisation to be photographed, how much will that cost, and how long will it take?

Our Corporate Sessions are designed for groups of people that need a consistent style for their brand. Many companies have an ongoing relationship with us that allows their new team members to have their photo taken at a reduced rate. Our group rates are discounted based on the number of people being photographed. To estimate the cost for your group, contact us to discuss the scope of your project, and get specific pricing for your organisation.

Can I reschedule my session if I get sick or something unexpected comes up?

I understand that life sometimes does not go to plan. Get in touch and I will do my best to rearrange at a time that's good for us both.

What time of day do you shoot headshot sessions? What day of the week? What about weekends?

I am available at your location from 8am until 8pm Monday to Saturday.

I totally and completely hate being photographed. Can you help me?

Almost every client who comes through my studio doors says something like: “I hate being photographed.” “When I have to look at the camera I just freeze up.” ” I have never had a photo session that I enjoyed." Trust me that it doesn’t have to be like any of the above statements! I promise that I will do everything in my power to make you comfortable and happy. I promise to bring understanding and kindness to your shoot and create a great space for you to feel calm, empowered, and ready to not hate the process of being photographed!

Can I have my boyfriend/girlfriend/colleague/mum/cat to be with me while we shoot?

If you want to have someone with you, you can. However, I want you to think about it before you decide! While it might be super fun to have someone to chat with, or to have a familiar face in the room, sometimes that can backfire and make you more nervous. It can sometimes be easier to pose and be photographed in front of people you don't know as well (namely, me!) and more uncomfortable to have someone you know there!

How do I know what to wear?

Here are a few tips to picking something to wear for your session:

  • Solid colours are generally preferred. Black is always great, darker tones work well.
  • Keep it simple! Keep patterns to a minimum, they can pull attention from your face.
  • No visible logos or branding on the clothing itself. They not only date the photo but also distract from your face.
  • Don’t worry about being seasonal. If it’s summer and you want to wear a sweater, wear a sweater. If it’s winter and freezing outside but you look best in a tank top, bring it on!
  • Men, ties are a matter of choice and expectation in your role - you will know best. If you are wearing a tie ensure that your shirt collar size is appropriate.
  • Prepare your clothes by ironing them before the shoot.
  • If you have a favourite jacket or scarf, have it with you. While we like to veer away from accessories, adding a favourite accessory for a few shots can be a nice touch. If in doubt, have it with you.
  • I recommend keeping your jewellery as simple as possible. Dramatic earrings or necklaces might look amazing, but they will pull focus from your facial features. If you’d like to add them for a few shots, that would be great.
  • If we’re just shooting simple headshots and not a personal branding session, you don’t need to worry about your shoes!
